They are named after their discoverer, Czech anatomist Jan Evangelista Purkyně, who characterized the cells in 1839. After muscle fibers contract, they cannot respond to an electrical impulse for a short period of time known as the refractory period. During this time, the muscle fibers repolarize and return to a resting state. The ventricular refractory period begins with the onset of the QRS complex and is complete near the end of the T wave. Purkinje fibers are specialized conductive myocardial cells with few myofibrils that promotes the rapid conduction of the impulse through the ventricles.
